Iraqi Refugee Artists Living in Exile...
The Iraqi refugee crisis is one of the most under-reported humanitarian crises in recent history, with an estimated 4 million Iraqis displaced from their homes in the firestorm set ablaze with the U.S. invasion. Most live as illegal immigrants in unstable conditions--without work, access to healthcare or the ability to educate their children. many refugees fled to neighboring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Syria, As dangerous as it is, over 1 million refugees are currently believed to be living in Syria. There is a small enclave of Iraqi artists living in Damascus-- dubbed Artists in Exile. They support each other, build exhibitions together and try to survive. Several of these artists have now been resettled in the U.S. and Canada. Many more are waiting.
Due to the situation in Syria, we are also assisting Syrian refugee painters. Please see bios to learn more.
